Psychological assistance for 300 people
Lysette* has been undergoing psychological treatment at the trauma therapy centre of the Albert-Schweitzer Hospital in Deschapelles, supported by AMURT, since 15 March 2010. She is suffering from anxiety and is seriously depressive. The doctors have diagnosed her as having post-traumatic stress syndrome as a result of the earthquake on 12 January 2010. She is slowly recovering and is at least able to get through her everyday life.
The need for psychological aid is great. Around 300 people are currently being treated by a team of psychologists specialising in post-traumatic stress syndrome. The team is mobile and comes directly to the people’s homes, the churches or to the children at their schools. As part of this, the people are informed of how post-traumatic stress manifests itself, and offered help with these symptoms. This is an important step towards ensuring the people are able to regain control of their lives.
*Name changed by the editor. Travel report from Mozambique Do you know how it feels to carry a 20-litre water canister on your head? “Unfortunately, I don’t either – I wasn’t able to hoist it above my head. I didn’t even manage to fill it myself with the hand pump. But for thousands upon thousands of women and children in Mozambique, this is part of their everyday work, even today. Children under the age of ten are often already carting these heavy canisters for miles to their homes. Our project aims to educate the people on how to maintain and repair their water pumps. Life ceases to exist without water. I was able to see the urgency of our work for myself in person.” Sandra Eder May 2010 from Xai-xai
In the districts of Xai-xai and Chibuto, there continue to be countless neglected water pumps which are unable to function. We are working with the local people in an attempt to improve the situation. A functional hand pump means water for up to 500 families! You can see more photos of my trip and info about the project here (only in German).
Sandra Eder is an AMURT staff member in Vienna. In May this year, she spent three weeks working on the water and sanitation project in southern Mozambique, which is also co-financed by the Austrian Development Co-operation (OEZA). |
