Project Type:
Emergency aid, construction of a community centre, agricultural training and food aid for children
Project Duration:
1999-2007
Project Summary:
The huge flood in December 1999 caused by the “El Nino” phenomenon destroyed large parts of Venezuela. Hundreds of thousands of people lost their homes and more than 20,000 people lost their lives. AMURT helped the victims with food, drinking water and clothes. Furthermore, a medical team distributed drugs, helped cure infectious diseases, administered vaccinations and assisted in childbirths. As most of the population, especially women, still live in poverty, AMURT assists and encourages them to become self-sufficient. In 2004, we constructed a community centre where women learn to sew, tailor and start up a small business through specific training courses. Land is very fertile in this area of Venezuela; however, it has not been adequately used. Therefore, AMURT decided to organise training sessions for young people to teach them techniques for planting papaya trees, selling fruit in the market and preparing and preserving the harvest. AMURT also distributed food and offered medical help to malnourished children under five. |
