Trauma Therapy Centere
Lysette* has been undergoing psychological treatment at the trauma therapy centre of Albert-Schweitzer Hospital in Deschapelles, supported by AMURT, since 15 March 2010. She is suffering from anxiety and is seriously depressive. The doctors have diagnosed her as having post-traumatic stress syndrome as a result of the earthquake on 12 January 2010. She is slowly recovering and is at least able to get through her everyday life.
More than 200,000 people died in Haiti’s devastating earthquake. AMURT responded to the disaster immediately. In February 2010, an AMURT team was on site to better assess the needs of the destitute. This resulted in the partnership with the AlbertSchweitzer Hospital in Deschapelles. The hospital was faced with immense challenges after the earthquake. Many people in Haiti are still in a catastrophic predicament six months after the earthquake. Apart from the miserable economic situation, the mental state of those affected is particularly bad. Men, women and children are traumatised and need psychological help. The trauma therapy centre is designed to assist people rebuild their lives.
The need for psychological aid is great. Around 850 people are currently being treated by a team of psychologists specialising in post-traumatic stress syndrome. The team is mobile and comes directly to the people’s homes, the churches or to the children at their schools. As part of this, the people are Psychological assistance for more than 850 people informed of how post-traumatic stress manifests itself, and offered help with these symptoms. This is an important step towards ensuring the people are able to regain control of their lives.

General Objective
Make available to persons traumatized by the seism of January 12th, 2010 from Port-au-Prince, a centre of psychotherapy and of counseling, which assures their psychosocial well being.
- Help the traumatised earthquake persons to discover the beneficial effects of trauma therapy as an integral part of psycho-social recovery.
- Assist the beneficiaries to cope with the aftermath of the earthquake disaster through rehabilitation and reintegration in the the community.
- Help patients discover their potential through their personal empowerment.
- Use Psycho-therapeutical strategies adapted to each of the person’s needs, to help them minimise the psychological and social strains encountered.
- To assess the most critical needs of patients, so as to gather important information for improvement of service delivery, and evaluation and development of the program.
