What happened?
Congo Brazzaville was shaken by political instability, local fighting and by a violent civil war since 1997. Even today Congo Brazzaville is not very well off: Occasional security incidents occur.
The country remains one of the most indebted countries in the world and approximately 70% of the population live below the poverty line. Children are the most vulnerable segment of the population. In Congo Brazzaville, there are many orphans – almost 7 % of the population (in total 270’000 orphans). There are many reasons why these orphans live in the streets. Many lost their parents during the civil war and during the ongoing fighting, some lost their parents to diseases or violent incidents. Others were abandoned because of poverty.
Orphanage
AMURT started its activities in Congo Brazzaville during the civil war in 1997. AMURT took on responsibility for100 children, who were previously taken care of by the International Red Cross. Once the Red Cross had left the country, AMURT set up a children’s home for these orphans. After the most violent fighting ended, AMURT successfully identified relatives of the children, thus reuniting families that were torn apart during the war. Today 25 children are staying at the orphanage. They go to school and learn a profession. The orphanage consists of two big dormitories – one for boys and one for girls – and one living area. Five employees take care of the children and run the orphanage.
