Project Summary

In 2001, 2.1 million people were infected with the HIV virus in Kenya. As a matter of fact, AIDS had become one of the major causes of death in this African country, with more than 1.5 million children losing their parents due to the fatal epidemic. There is an urgent need for action. In 2001, AMURT joined forces with the local organisation, Women Fighting AIDS in Kenya (WOFAK), in order to help stop the spread and impact of the illness. WOFAK is a non-governmental organisation running its own HIV centre. AMURT involved the concerned families and also the local communities. To begin, the organisation provided comprehensive training on the prevention methods from HIV/AIDS for different groups. Various services were offered, such as HIV-testing. The HIV centre also provided medical support and consulting for HIV-positive people and their families, and it informed them of alternatives in treatment methods. The HIV centre also provided financial support for orphans.

At a later stage, AMURT constructed its own health centre in order to give HIV-positive individuals a contact point for medical support. Besides prevention education, individuals also had access medical care.
