Project Summary
There is no doubt that the long civil war in ex-Yugoslavia severely affected the local population. Major parts of the Bosnian-Herzegovina capital, Sarajevo, were completely destroyed or heavily damaged. After the war people had to be provided with vital goods in order to give them the opportunity for a new start. In 1995 and 1996, AMURT was engaged in emergency aid by distributing food to war victims.
AMURT also set up long-term projects. In the heart of Sarajevo, 70% of a home and school for the blind was destroyed. The blind and visually-handicapped children and teenagers were unable to continue their studies. Besides reconstruction and renovation of the building, there was an urgent need to improve the educational and medical services of the home.
In cooperation with the home’s directors and the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports in Sarajevo, AMURT contributed to the reconstruction and rehabilitation of the centre. The home provided training and support for more than 300, blind and visually-handicapped, children and teenagers. The newly constructed centre located in the heart of Sarajevo cared not only about its own pupils, but was accessible for the public too. AMURT covered the doctors’ fees and medical costs. More complicated cases were treated in Switzerland, with AMURT paying for the patients’ transport and operation costs.
